Offshore Poker Concerns
The trend of gambling on the internet has risen sharply over the last year in the United States, but with that trend came government scrutiny. In recent months, the online poker rooms which remain popular in the USA have come under fire. The US Justice Department seems to be waging a war against online gambling, particularly in the realm of sports bettings sites.
To combat this growing concern, executives running online gambling sites typically set their operation up at offshore sites, free from US legislation which could potentially choke or completely ruin their business. After one of these offshore operators was arrested in the States, these firms have become more trepidatious regarding the risk of doing business here - concerned that the US is targetting their offshore firms. Many gambling sites which have recently acquired sports betting operations will not even take bets from American visitors.
Currently, these firms are in a wait-and-see mode, but none of them are rushing to do business in the United States - for fear of prosecution if they come here. Poker rooms aren't quite as nervous as their sports betting counterparts, since they haven't been targetted quite as ferociously. Still, the gambling community as a whole is waiting with baited breath at any future developments... with some foreign gambling sites excluding American players altogether.
